As the 1984 Hayfork High play dates get closer, the theater class is working hard to put the final touches on the play, working with the HHS construction class on putting up the sets and the HHS media arts class on multimedia.
Pre-sale tickets to secure preferred seating are now available for the May 20, May 21, May 27, and May 28 performances at the Hayfork High stage. Curtain time is 7 p.m. To secure your tickets, reach out to a student in the theater class (listed below), call the Hayfork High office at (530) 628-5261, go to the Hayfork High School’s office, or email the director Joanne Tucker at jtucker@mvusd.us. Tickets are $10 whether pre-sale or at the door.
As described by the publisher: “1984 is a theatrical dystopia that follows the life of Winston Smith, a low-ranking member of ‘the Party,’ who is frustrated by the omnipresent eyes of the party and its ominous ruler, Big Brother.” It is adapted from the original novel 1984 by George Orwell by authors Robert Owens, Wilton E. Hall Jr. and William A. Miles Jr. with permission from Dramatic Publishing.
“The production of the play is coming along quite nicely,” said Alan Buell, who plays the lead role of Winston Smith. “Everyone is giving their all in performance and memorization. There are nerves, of course, as the days till we perform dwindle down, but I have full confidence we’ll do a fantastic job.”
Other student actors are Samantha Castellanos, senior, as Julia; Cheyenne Xiong, senior, as O’Brien; Andy Yang, senior, as Loudspeaker; Charlie Vang, junior; as Syme; Sunshine Montgomery, senior, as Parsons and Goldstein; Siena Yang, junior, as Gladys; Samarah Rhoades, freshman, as Landlady; Quentin Horne, freshman, as Martin; Haumsiab Xiong, senior, as guard and stage crew; and Angelina Yang, senior, as waitress, messenger and stage crew.
More student roles include Alyssa DeMoe, senior, as assistant director; Jacalyn Carson, senior, as lighting director; Trinity Foster, senior, as art director; and Gaochia Yang, sophomore, as stage crew.
“In my second year as the theater teacher at HHS, the theater students have shown their ownership over the program by taking on all the artwork, and the stage crew understands how pivotal they are in addition to the actors,” said Joanne Tucker, the director and theater arts teacher. “They all chime in with ideas and understand that putting on a play is hard work and a collaborative effort, so I can't wait for them to enjoy the fruits of their labors during our May performances. I hope to see a strong show of community support by attending one of the four nights, so we can continue to grow the program and put on another excellent performance next year.”
