The primary focus of the meeting was to highlight the accomplishments both schools had. The math counts, 8 students, brought home a few trophies from their competition by placing third. The advisor Emily Harrison said, “It was a great experience for those kids. Which being virtual last year was that missing piece.” The math counts will continue to compete until they hopefully end up in states.
Basketball is a huge hit in both schools; both the boys and girls varsity teams advanced to playoffs.
The Poetry Out Loud team did not place in TAPAC which ended their time in the county wide competition. Joanne Tucker spoke up at the competition saying, “Cheyenne Xiong, her poem made me have goosebumps. Very surprised she didn’t place.” The theater class has begun blocking for this year's play.
The winter dance also took place March 5th in the high school’s cafeteria.
Superintendent Anmarie Swanstrom gave the mid-year report. There are a total of 221 enrolled students in the elementary school, Valley High has 4 enrolled students, and Hayfork High has 83 enrolled students. The staff at all schools has taken on the responsibility of filling any unfilled or vacant positions, especially the ones that need to be filled.
The meeting started off with the addition of Joe Trindade to the board after board member Jenifer Schrock resigned. Cindy Winter resigned from the board as president but will remain on the board. Kenny Wiley was then voted by the board into the president position. (CORRECTION: This version is now corrected from an earlier version that mistakenly stated that Winter had stepped down from the board entirely. Winter remains on the board but Wiley is now board president.)
Hayfork Elementary School has now moved into their new classrooms and portables have been removed. When speaking on the construction, superintendent Annmarie Swanstrom said it was “great to approach in a team manner and to the architect and Richard it has felt like a really good process…so thank you all for making it easy”. Richard, head of construction also comments on the teamwork of the construction, “I can’t express enough how hard this process would’ve been without such a great team”.
The board approved the School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) for both Hayfork High School and Hayfork Elementary. According to the SPSA template, “This involves providing online and one-on-one academic support, behavior interventions and restorative discipline practices and the delivery of a social emotional curriculum and small group and individual counseling.”
The 2022-23 school year calendar has been approved with observance of Lincoln’s birthday providing presidents week in 2023.
The board also approved of the Indian Valley Summer Camp Inclusion as a MVUSD Supplemental Program. The watershed wrote in their request, “This will be the 20th year that the IVSC has partnered with MVUSD to provide healthy, educational, and fun outdoor programming for local youth outside of the regular school year.”
April 5, 2022 - CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article mistakenly stated that Winters had stepped down from the board entirely. We apologize for this error. The school enrollment numbers were also incorrect in the first version published as well as the last name of Joe Trindade. We regret these errors.
