This year's Hmong New Year took place on November 11, 2023. The Hmong Club's President, Mercedes Thao, and her dance crew performed their Hmong dance at Hayfork High School on November 8, 2023. The idea of the Hmong Club event sparked from the feedback of the Hmong students. It soon grew into a bigger concept, concluding in the Hmong dance. The event was meant to convey the message of cutural appreciation. "In our high school, there was never a Hmong performance, so I felt that we could change that," stated Mercedes Thao. The meaning behind the Hmong dance isn't that serious, but more of a time to have fun. Each song speaks directly to the community, translating to "Come and dance." The dance took 2 weeks to learn. In spite of learning 3 songs, the crew gave it everything they had. The Hmong Club dance crew also performed at the 2023 Hmong New Year. With the opportunity to participate in such an event in a small town, the club leader jumped at such a deal. "It was really, really stressful preparing for that day, but I was really happy to perform for the school and Hmong New Year. We actually made an impact and I hope that we'll be remembered," Mercedes exclaimed.
