Hayfork Elementary School hosted the 2022 Trinity County Spelling Bee on March 7th, which was brought together by the Trinity County Office of Education (TCOE). Students from grades 4th through 9th from many schools in the county traveled to Hayfork to compete in the Spelling Bee. The Spelling Bee had two separate divisions, 4-6 and 7-9th grades. Six students made up Hayfork Elementary School’s team. In the 4-6 group there was Aevaley Connor (4th grade), Stormy Ashby (5th grade), Josie Brown (6th grade). The 7-9 group consisted of Gavin Sarron (7th grade), Mukeng Yang (8th grade), Sebastian Thao (8th grade), Buddy Miller (9th grade), Quentin Horne (9th grade), Phillip Buell (9th grade), Jade Buell (9th grade), Carly Faycurry (9th grade) and Hadrian Burton (9th grade).
Brown placed fifth in the 4-6th grade level. Connor and Ashby were in a very tough one-word spell off that would decide third and fourth place. Ashby came out on top and won the 3rd place trophy. The 7-9 division spellers had very tough words and did very well especially because they were competing against high schoolers (9th grade). Burton took the third place trophy home for Hayfork High School. “I am very proud of each and every one of them,” says Coach CJ Sisco.
A special thanks to the High School ELA teacher, Ms. Joanne Tucker for rallying the 9th graders and helping them prepare.
