Hayfork High Sophomore Taylor Guilfoile placed second place in the Carnegie Mellon University CS1 Academy Creative Task Competition for Unit 2.
Guilfoile wrote 573 lines of code to create the GIF, pictured left. The competition is international and more than 120 schools participated.
When asked how she felt about placing, Taylor Guilfoile said “It was super cool to find out that I placed especially since I had been working on it for a while. I was really hoping to place and it was a big surprise to find out I did.”
The HHS programming class uses a curriculum created by Carnegie Mellon: Introduction to Programming and Computer Science as well as using python to learn how to code properly. The programming class also completes a project at the end of each unit.
Teacher Karlie Elliott expressed her joy over Guilfoile placing second, “I am so happy for Taylor. She worked really hard in and outside of class. Programming is great because it combines creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving. I am excited to see what projects she comes up with next!”
