The Hayfork High school basketball teams lost both games to Ferndale Wildcats on Tuesday, Nov. 30. Their first game against Ferndale was not a league game; but regardless, the Hayfork Timberjacks played their games like it was their very last.
To start off the first quarter of the girls’ basketball game, Hayfork had gotten the tip off from Alexis Smith, senior. Ferndale took the lead soon after the first quarter started. Hayfork tried hard to pull through and be persistent but by the time the first quarter had ended, Ferndale was still in the lead, 28-7.
Hayfork had the throw-in to start off the third quarter and made a shot by Alexis Smith, shortly after the quarter had started. Both teams in the beginning of the quarter struggled to make a large amount of points; they were continuously switching from offense and defense. Hayfork kept up their persistence regardless of the intensity.
In the last quarter; Hayfork earned some points by a senior, Maddison Balbini, who made a three-pointer. Hayfork was determined to work as a team all throughout the quarters regardless of how tough it was to pull through. “It was a fun first game,” said Lila Bonfoey, sophomore, who also played point guard for the first time.
The boys’ basketball game began with Ferndale taking the tip off. Hayfork had scored the very first points by senior Hayden Carini but Ferndale took the lead from there on. The final score of the first quarter was 15-9.
In the second quarter, Hayfork played hard to gain their points while playing offense. The team had kept up their morale throughout this quarter and pushed through even when they faced difficulties. Noah Fielding, junior, had finally scored points after a long period of Ferndale’s possession of the ball. To end the second quarter; Dakota Mummy, senior, scored the final points making it 30-16.
Hayfork started with the ball in the third quarter but Ferndale had swiftly taken the ball away soon after. After Hayfork had gotten the ball back, Mummy had scored multiple points making it 32-22. Throughout the third quarter, Hayfork encountered many challenges, in facing their opponents but that didn’t stop them from keeping up their spirits. The third quarter ended with the score of 51-24.
In the last quarter, Hayfork worked hard and fast in order to catch up to Ferndale. Troy Hair, sophomore, had scored the very first points of the last quarter; making the score 62-30. To end off the last quarter, Dakota Mummy had made one last shot right before the timer buzzed. Although this was a fairly tough game, Hayfork worked vigorously and will continue to show their tough Timberjack pride throughout the season!
