Hayfork had a big road win in Bieber Friday night as they beat the Big Valley Cardinals 58-6 in a battle of undefeated teams. The game was scoreless through the first half of the first quarter, and on Hayfork's second possession, Levi Cavalli scored on an 11 yard TD run and also ran in the 2 point play to make the score 8-0. Cavalli then intercepted a Big Valley pass, and Devin Nanez scored on a 36 yard TD run. Nanez ran in the 2 point play and the lead was 16-0 at the end of the first quarter. Hayfork broke the game open in the second quarter as they scored four times and Cavalli intercepted two more Big Valley pass plays. Cavalli scored on a 32 yard TD run and he also scored on the 2 point play to make the score 24-0. Anthony Bonelli scored on a 5 yard TD run to make the score 30-0. Nanez scored on a 37 yard TD run and Bonelli ran in the 2 point play to increase the lead to 38-0. Cavalli scored with a minute left in the half on a 69 yard TD run and it was 44-0 at the half. Bonelli intercepted a Big Valley pass at midfield and it looked like he had a good chance to run it back for a touchdown, but an inadvertent whistle negated the play.
Big Valley requested a running clock in the second half and the Timberjacks scored quickly on a 14 yard TD run by Nanez. Bonelli added the 2 point play and the lead was 52-0. Big Valley scored halfway through the quarter on a 50 yard TD pass, and the score was 52-6. This was the first points that the Hayfork defense has given up on the season, and Big Valley had scored 127 points in their last two games, so to hold the Cardinals to six points is one heck of an accomplishment. In the 4th quarter, Nanez was in at quarterback and on an option play he pitched it forward to Mukeng Yang and he scampered 53 yards for the touchdown. It was a running play but the forward pitch made it officially a pass play, which would be Hayfork's only pass play of the night. It brought the final score to 58-6.
Levi Cavalli had a career night. He had 222 yards rushing on 14 carries with 4 TD runs. He also helped shut down the Big Valley Offense with four interceptions. Devin Nanze had 154 yards on 10 carries with 2 TD runs, and he also completed a TD pass. Anthony Bonelli carried the ball 8 times for 75 yards and a TD run. Mukeng Yang had the TD reception from Nanez Defensively, Nanez set the tone with several big hits. He finished with 7 solo tackles and a sack. Cavalli had 5 tackles (4 solo) and four interceptions. Bonelli had six tackles (4 solo) This was one of the biggest wins in a long time for Hayfork as the Timberjacks improved their record to 7-0. The kids had their best week of practice all season. We put in a great game plan and the kids executed it well. They hustled on every play, and Big Valley is a solid football team. It was a solid team victory. We hope to see a big crowd this Friday as we host the Herlong Vikings at 6:00pm. We look to go to 8-0 on the season.
