Hayfork started off the season with a shutout at home on Friday night. Hayfork received the ball first and held the ball for most of the opening quarter, scoring on a 7 yard TD run by Levi Cavalli. Cavalli ran in the 2 point conversion and the Timberjacks led 8-0. Hayfork recovered an onsides kick and held on to the ball until the opening of the second quarter. Cavalli again scored, this time on a 14 yard run and the lead was 14-0. Chester did not run a single offensive play in the first quarter. Chester finally gained possession, but they could not move the ball and had to punt it back to Hayfork. Cavalli scored at the end of another long drive, and Devin Nanez ran in the 2 point conversion to increase the score to 22-0. Chester had the ball one more time, but punted again near the end of the half as the Volcanoes ran only six total plays in the first half.
The third quarter was scoreless as both teams traded three possessions each, but could not generate any offense. Hayfork started the 4th quarter with a 14 yard run by Devin Nanez and Cavalli added the 2 point run to increase the lead to 30-0. The Timberjacks finished the scoring as Cavalli scored on a 36 yard run to make the final score 36-0. Cavalli was the leading rusher with 188 yards on 26 carries with 4 touchdowns. Nanez had 98 yards on 20 carries with a TD, and Anthony Bonelli had 77 yards on 12 carries. Hayfork ran 65 offensive plays on the night and they were all running plays. Defensively, Nanez led the team with 10 tackles (5 solo) and a half a sack with a forced fumble. Aidan Lorton had 9 tackles (5 solo), and half a sack. Hayden Trossauer had 6 tackles (5 solo), with two sacks and a fumble recovery. Anthony Bonelli had 8 tackles (4 solo) and Levi Cavalli had 7 tackles (1 solo). Mukeng Yang had an excellent game at corner in pass coverage.
This was definitely a great way to start the season as Chester won 10 games last season and were the section runner up. We have a good group of kids this year and they have worked hard at practice. Their efforts were rewarded Friday night. The Timberjacks will travel to Dorris on Friday night to take on the Butte Valley Bulldogs who are also 1-0 after beating Dunsmuir 60-0. Game time will be 6:00pm.
